Our 4WD training is conducted as a full-day course at the Mount Cotton Training Centre. The course covers stall recovery, rough terrain, ascents and descents, mud, slime, sloppy stuff and more.
The course is run on a completion basis for the full day.
The theory component of the course includes:
- The difference between 2WDs and 4WDs
- Gear selection
- Driving on narrow bush tracks
- Driving different terrains
- Vehicle articulation
- Sand driving
- Water crossings
- Safety gear
- Safety when travelling
- Techniques for Defensive Driving

The practical component includes:

- Knowing your 4WD vehicle
- First and second principles of four wheel driving
- Seating position
- Engaging and disengaging low range
- Basic ascents and descents
- Stall recovery and hill starts
- Axle articulation
- Side slopes
- Climbing loose surfaces
- Braking on loose surfaces
- Emergency braking using threshold braking method
- Mud Driving-
- Check the bottom of the mud for firmness
- You are driving on slicks
- Loss of directional control
- Vehicle Recovery:
- Using a snatch strap
- Joining two snatch straps
- Using a winch
Finish the day by reading a track and looking at wheel placement alternatives. Also have the chance to attempt a few loose ascents and descents.

4WD full day course at Mt Cotton:
- $300.00 per individual booking
Prices include GST, facility hire, morning tea and lunch.
